Dr. Praveen Arany is a Professor at the University at Buffalo and one of the world’s foremost researchers in photobiomodulation (PBM) — the therapeutic use of light to promote healing, reduce pain and inflammation, and enhance cellular performance. Originally trained as a dentist and biomedical engineer, Dr. Arany’s research journey began when he encountered a paper suggesting that light could accelerate wound healing. Skeptical at first, he followed the science — and never looked back.
Over the past 27 years, Dr. Arany has become a central figure in establishing the scientific and clinical credibility of PBM. His lab at the University at Buffalo discovered that the growth factor TGF-beta contains a light-sensitive amino acid, a finding that unlocked a new mechanistic understanding of how light stimulates wound healing. He holds six patents, has authored over 150 peer-reviewed scientific publications with more than 11,000 citations, and has an H-index of 41 — a measure of the sustained influence of his research across the field. His work has been featured in mainstream media in over 70 countries, and he has received numerous awards including the Senior Excellence in Research Award from the World Association of Photobiomodulation and the Young Investigator Award from the National Cancer Institute.
Dr. Arany is a passionate advocate for integrating PBM into mainstream clinical care — particularly as a standard adjunct in cancer treatment — and a strong supporter of practice-based research networks as a mechanism for expanding the evidence base and training the next generation of applied practitioners.
